Aquaculture – Improving Hatchery Biosecurity in Bangladesh

Date: October 12, 2023

The shrimp industry is a vital part of Bangladesh’s economy and livelihood for thousands of families. However, poor biosecurity practices can lead to devastating losses, disease outbreaks, and long-term environmental harm. Recognizing this challenge, C-CAB is leading a behavior change communication (BCC) initiative to empower shrimp farmers and hatchery owners with the knowledge, tools, and motivation they need to protect their farms and ensure sustainable growth.

What We’re Doing

To strengthen biosecurity practices, the project focuses on practical, easy-to-access communication tools designed for the aquaculture community:

  • Instructional Videos: Step-by-step guides demonstrating proper biosecurity measures, disease prevention techniques, and best farming practices.

  • Motivational Videos: Stories and real-life success cases that inspire farmers to adopt better practices for long-term gains.

  • Self-Assessment Apps: Interactive mobile tools that allow farmers and hatchery owners to evaluate their current biosecurity standards and receive tailored recommendations for improvement.

Why It Matters

  • Protecting Livelihoods: Healthy shrimp farms mean higher yields, better quality produce, and improved income stability for farmers.

  • Sustainable Aquaculture: By reducing disease outbreaks and promoting responsible farming, we safeguard the environment and aquatic ecosystems.

  • Empowering Communities: Through Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC), C-CAB ensures that farmers don’t just follow instructions but truly understand why biosecurity is critical for their success.

Our Approach in Action

This initiative reflects C-CAB’s core philosophy: using SBCC tools to drive sustainable environmental practices and strengthen local livelihoods. By combining technology, storytelling, and grassroots engagement, we’re helping the shrimp industry become more resilient, innovative, and eco-conscious.
